Gum disease, or periodontal disease, usually happens as a result of the bacteria in plaque contaminating gum tissues. Gums can begin moving away from the teeth if periodontal disease is not treated, and loss of bone or teeth and receding gum tissue can follow.
You may be experiencing periodontal disease If your gums are red, tender, swollen or bleeding easily. Bad breath, loose teeth, uncomfortable chewing or a “gummy” smile (where the gums have moved away from your teeth, making them look longer) are also signs of gum disease. Our dentists and team will be able to tell whether you are struggling with gum disease after an in-office exam.
Our dentists and team will recommend gum disease treatments for you based on your oral health needs and the condition of the disease. If the condition is less severe, our dentists may suggest more in-office dental cleanings, improvements to your home oral hygiene habits, or antibiotic treatments. Advanced stages of gum disease may require scaling and root planing (deep cleanings) or gum surgery.
If you would like to learn more about periodontal disease or set up an appointment, we invite you to contact our office. A member of our team would be happy to speak with you.
